Minoxidil and Finasteride

Minoxidil (brand name Rogaine, now OTC) dilates blood vessels and was originally developed as an oral medication to treat high blood pressure. This lotion promotes hair growth in about 25% of men and women, though it may take several months to work. New hair is usually thinner and lighter, like baby hair, and grows mostly on the top of the head, not at the hairline. Its effects may fade with time. Skin irritation is the most commonly reported side effect. Dizziness and increased heart rate have also been reported, but rarely.

Finasteride (brand name Propecia) is the same oral prescription drug used in higher doses (and called Proscar) to treat an enlarged prostate. It inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Propecia is not effective in men who are completely bald, but it does promote hair growth and slow hair loss in men who are just beginning to lose hair. In one study 60% of men had new hair growth and more than 80% slowed their hair loss after 6 to 12 months of treatment.

How Hair Loss Supplements Works?

Male hair loss is caused by a chemical called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). A naturally occurring enzyme in your body called 5 alpha-reductase transforms the male hormone testosterone into DHT. DHT is the main cause of thinning hair and receding hairline in men.

Certain herbs and minerals, in the proper mixture, can bind with 5 alpha-reductase and block DHT formation. Supplements with the correct ingredients can halt the effects of DHT, and even assist in the regrowth of hair, particular in men ages 18-40.

Ingredients in Avacor

Avacor's topical product contains Minoxidil (the same active ingredient as Rogaine), as well as other herbal and natural ingredients. The corporate website says that Avacor contains the "highest concentration of the proven hair growth medication - minoxidil". I guess the highest concentration is the same as maximum strength Rogaine and similar generics, which is 5%.

Many claim that saw palmetto has effects that mimic Propecia, in its ability to alter the way the body handles DHT. However, I have found little hard evidence to support this claim. The Avacor Nutricaps also contain ginkgo biloba, which may increase bloodflow to the brain. Ginkgo is often taken as a natural supplement to increase mental performance and memory enhancer. Remember, just because something is an herb does not mean it has no side effects.
